Pens, feeding

The New World monkeys come from Latin America. This affects their breeding.

The temperature should be 22°C at least, relative humidity 80%, the lenght of daylight cca 12 hours. The pens must be roomy, easy-clean and provided with outdoore fowl run if possible. The sunlight is essential for the monkeys. It supports the transformation of provitamine D into the vitamine D and prevents the rickets. If there are no outdoor fowl runs it is necessary to imitate them by UV fluorescent lamps that are very close to the sun spectrum. Our pens combine plywood, glass and polycarbonate. Shavings are used as bedding because they absorb animal excrements very well and restrain bad smell. Cleaning is done daily – shelving, glass – weekly, bedding, shacks.

The pens are heated by gas heating for cca 25°C. Humidity is kept by splashing the water once a day and natural vaporization from basins, feeding pumps and the floor. The wall of the pen is replaced by wire netting in summer. We gain natural transillumination of the pen.

Feeding

The New World monkeys are omnivores, they feed on both animal and vegetable substances. In natural surroundings it means various fruit, berries and leaves of plants, insect, eggs and young birds, small mammals. A substantial part of their nutriment is tree sap that contains polysaccharides.

The feed given to the animals bred under human control must be always fresh and first-class.

Vegetable substance consists of – bananas, apples, oranges, citruses, tangerines, grapevine and seasonal fruit – cherries, plums, apricots, peaches, pears.

- vegetable – carrots, tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, cucumbers, potatoes, melons

- Nuts – hazelnuts, walnuts, peanuts

- dry fruits – raisins, apples, bananas, prunes

- side dishes – pasta, popcorn, oatmeal, corn flakes, rice, groats, sponge biscuits, bread and rolls

- pulse – lentils, peas, beans

Animal substance – boiled poultry, fish and rabbit meat, curd, eggs, yogurt, granules for cats, flour beetles, locusts, zoofobasi and mice pups.

Porridges establish a separate part – children mush Milupa, Nestlé – rice and banana. Tamarin cooke is a special mush sweetened by honey for New World Monkeys. It provides polysaccharides instead of the tree sap and is very important part of their nutrition.

Regular introsusception of vitamins and minerals is highly important. The monkeys are very sensitive to lack of those and they can get metabolic illnesses (rickets, osteomalacia, avitaminosis etc.)

Saturated and unsaturated fatty acids are also necessary to provide in the form of oils (olive, fish oil etc.) as well as clean water exchanged every day.
